Trial electronic resources

The Library has arranged trial access to the following online resources. These services can be accessed by University of Sheffield staff and students for a limited time only:



The Economist Historical Archive, 1843-2011
 
The Economist was established in 1843 to campaign for free trade and freedom of the individual. The complete archive (1843-2011) is available, with editorial, advertising and tabular matter all fully searchable.

The Financial Times Historical Archive, 1888-2010
 
The complete searchable facsimile run of the daily business newspaper, from 1888 to 2010.

The Japan Times Digital Archive, 1897-2014
Japan Times Digital Archive includes digital and searchable scans of all pages published in The Japan Times between 1897 and 2014. The Japan Times is the English language daily newspaper published in Japan.

Spare Rib Magazine

Spare Rib was a landmark national feminist magazine. It was first published in July 1972 and continued until January 1993. All 239 editions of the magazine are now available online for the first time, providing a valuable insight into women’s lives and this period of feminist activity.

Access is available from this webpage. Alternatively, search for “Spare Rib” using the University Collections search box on the StarPlus Library catalogue. 

Additionally, the British Library’s Spare Rib website features selected pages from the magazine, alongside articles written by academics, activists and former contributors.

Cambridge Histories Online: now available

We have recently purchased an exciting new resource, Cambridge Histories Online, and this is now available via MUSE.

Cambridge Histories Online provides access to over 300 books published since the 1960s in a variety of subject areas including British History, Economic History, Language and Linguistics, Literary Studies, Music, Philosophy, Religious Studies and Theatre Studies.

You can search the whole collection, browse by subject, or view a full list of titles. The records for individual titles are also being added to StarPlus.

Temporary access to the Churchill Archive

Anyone interested in Modern British history might be interested to know we have an electronic trial available to the Churchill Archive until 9th January 2013. The archive contains over 800,000 pages from original documents from the Churchill Archive centre in Cambridge.

RILM - enhancements for Music searches

EBSCOhost the provider of RILM Abstracts of Music literature have updated their site to  make subject indexing searchable within four areas:

  • Names

  • Subjects

  • Instrument Families

  • Countries

Archives Unbound

Calling all Historians - particularly those interested in Vietnam. I have obtained access to the Gale Cengage Collection: Archives Unbound. We have access to three collections of documents/primary sources

1.America in protest: Records of anti-Vietnam war organisations

2.Intelligence reports from the National Security Council's Vietnam Information Group 1967-1975

3. U.S. Civilian advisory effort in Vietnam...1950-1954

Electronic access to full text Philosophy titles

The University Library now has full text electronic access to the following titles from the Intelex Past Masters collection. You may be prompted to log into MUSE:

Bibliography of British and Irish History - trial electronic resource

We currently have trial access to the Bibliography of British and Irish History.

The BBIH provides bibliographic data on historical writing relating to British and Irish history from the Roman period to the present day. It includes the details of books, articles in books and articles in journals. For more details on the range of information included take a look at the 'Introduction' tab.

Both advanced and simple searching options are available. Take a look at the 'how to search' section to help you get started.

Access to this electronic resource is available to registered staff and students of the University of Sheffield until 31 December 2009.
